Today we celebrate William Shakespeare's birthday

  1. William Shakespeare (baptised on 26 April 1564 —23 April 1616) was an English poet, playwright and actor, considered as the greatest writer in the English language.

    Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. He moved to London, so that he could gain popularity and his plays could be known.

    He was a founding member of the "Lord Chamberlain's Men", company of actors founded in 1594, which became the "King's Men" in 1603 when King James ascended the throne.

    In 1599 "The Globe" Theatre was built and owned by the actors in the "Lord Chamberlain's Men". In this theatre the plays of William Shakespeare were performed.

    Shakespeare produced most of his known works. His first plays were mainly comedies and histories. His most famous comedies are "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "Much Ado about Nothing" and "The Tempest"
    He also wrote many tragedies among them "Hamlet", "Othello", "King Lear", "Romeo and Juliet" and Macbeth, all considered to be among the best works in the English language.

    He moved back to Stratford-upon-Avon in 1608 and died on 23 April 1616 at the age of 52
